We will not ask you if you were "exempt", because almost nobody knows. Instead, tell us your visa and when you first came. We count your years for you, work out which of your days count, and show you the answer with the numbers. New to the word exempt? Read the plain English explanation first, it takes two minutes.
Look at your first I-20 or DS-2019 start date, or your oldest US entry stamp. Example: you arrived in August 2023, so your first year is 2023.
Most students: 0. Count these only if you had an earlier US stay on F or J, for example a bachelor's before a master's, in years before the first year above.
Not sure of your days? Your I-94 travel history at i94.cbp.dhs.gov lists every entry and exit.
Simplified checker for guidance only. It does not handle days you could not leave because of a medical condition, the closer connection exception (Form 8840), dual-status years, or treaty tie-breakers. The full My1040NR interview handles all of those.
