The forms, in plain English

Form 1040-NR

The US tax return for nonresident aliens. Wages, taxable scholarships, and business income connected to the US go here, at the same graduated rates residents pay. If you had US income and you are a nonresident, this is your return, not Form 1040.

Form 8843

A one page statement for exempt individuals. Every F, J, M and Q holder files it every year they are in the US, even with no income, and so does each dependent on F-2, J-2, M-2 or Q-2. Filed alone, it mails to a different IRS address than a return with a payment.

Form 1042-S

Issued by your university for treaty-exempt pay, scholarships, and other payments to foreign students. The income code and exemption code on this form decide how the money is taxed. Keep every copy: different income can mean several 1042-S forms in one year.

Schedule NEC and Schedule OI

Schedule NEC taxes US income that is not connected to a job or business (dividends, some interest, rents, royalties) at a flat 30 percent or a lower treaty rate. Schedule OI reports your visa, your countries, your treaty claims, and your days in the US. We fill OI from your residency answers, so you never answer twice.

Form 8833

The disclosure form for a treaty position that overrides the tax code. Many student treaty claims are exempt from it, but some are not, and missing it when it is required can mean a penalty. We check, and we include it when your claim needs it.

Forms 843 and 8316 (FICA refund)

If your employer withheld Social Security and Medicare tax while you were FICA exempt on an F or J visa, you ask the employer first. If they will not refund it, these two forms claim it back from the IRS. We prepare the whole package.

Page 1 of your PDF is a mailing slip

Your PDF does not start with a tax form. It starts with a mailing slip made from your own answers. At the top, your name and return address (the sender). In the middle, in the largest type on the page, the one IRS address that matches your exact case, with a plain sentence saying why that address: a 1040-NR with no payment goes to a different place than a 1040-NR with a check inside, and an 8843 filed alone goes to a different place again. Under that, a tick-box list of everything in your envelope and a "before you seal it" checklist (signed, dated, copies kept, attachments in). At the bottom, inside a dashed cut line, the same addresses as a label you can cut out and tape to the envelope. See a sample mailing slip (PDF, fictional data).

How you get these forms from us: answer the questions in one session, download one PDF with every form filled in, print it, sign it, and mail it. We prepare PDFs only. We do not transmit or file anything for you, and we save nothing after your session ends.
